lemlist Alternatives for Link Builders: 7 Compared on Cost

The best lemlist alternative for a link builder depends on why you are leaving. If you want cheaper sending, Woodpecker, Smartlead and Saleshandy cover 500 prospects a month for $35 to $41. If you want the link building side lemlist never had (Domain Rating and traffic on every prospect, the right editor's address and a record of the live link), linkOreach does that for $49 a month, and BuzzStream and Pitchbox do it for agency teams at $174 to $300.

Most lists of lemlist alternatives are written by sales engagement vendors for SDR teams, and they rank tools on LinkedIn steps, dialers and lead databases. None of that decides whether a guest post pitch gets answered. This comparison scores seven alternatives on what link building outreach needs, with prices from each vendor's own pricing page, a cost worked out for a three-person team, and a switching checklist for moving campaigns out of lemlist without hurting your domain.

lemlist is a good tool, and for some link building teams it is the right one. Its Email plan is $69 a month, or $55 billed yearly, with unlimited users, unlimited email senders, 50,000 emails a month, an email and phone finder over a database of 650M+ leads, and lemwarm, its warm-up tool, included. The Multichannel plan adds LinkedIn, SMS and calling for $109 a month, or $87 billed yearly, priced per user with 5 senders per user. Extra contact data is an add-on from $20 a month for 2,000 credits, which covers 400 emails or 100 phone numbers, and the trial runs 14 days with 200 credits.

Unlimited users on a flat $69 is the strongest part of that offer: a team of five pays the same as a freelancer. The gaps are about what the tool was built for.

  • No SEO data on prospects. lemlist has no Domain Rating, organic traffic or ranking data next to a lead, so qualifying sites happens in your SEO tool and a spreadsheet before anything is imported.
  • No record of the link. A lemlist campaign ends at a reply. Whether the link went live, on the agreed URL with the agreed attributes, is tracked somewhere else.
  • A sales-shaped data model. The lead database and the buying intent signals add-on are built to find buyers at companies. Link builders need the author or editor of one specific page.
  • Headroom you will not use. 50,000 emails a month is sized for sales prospecting. A link builder contacting 500 sites with two follow-ups sends 1,500.
  • Warm-up you may not want. lemwarm is on every plan, and since September 2026 it is worth deciding deliberately whether to run it. The next section explains why.

If none of those bother you, stay. If two or more do, one of the tools below will fit better.

The warm-up question: lemwarm and Heatwave

lemlist's own lemwarm setup guide sets out how a new mailbox should be warmed. You set lemwarm to the volume the mailbox will send later, 30 to 40 a day, and it adds one warm-up email a day until it gets there, which takes about 40 days. It then holds that target for 14 days of stabilization, with lemlist kept at zero throughout. Only then does the first campaign start, at 30 a day, while lemwarm drops to 10 a day and stays on for as long as the mailbox sends. Across lemlist, lemwarm and manual replies, total output stays under 70 a day per provider.

On September 3, 2026, Validity launched Heatwave, a blocklist for synthetic domain warming: services that connect to a sender's mailbox and generate messages, opens, clicks and replies between networks of accounts to build a sending reputation. The list already covers more than 1 million domains, and Comcast, Proofpoint, Spamhaus and SURBL are among the organizations using or evaluating it. It does not name any warm-up vendor, lemwarm included, and it does not publish its detection criteria, so nobody outside Validity can say which products trigger a listing.

For link builders the schedule matters as much as the blocklist. Followed as written, it means close to two months in which a new mailbox sends only warm-up, and a quarter of its daily traffic stays warm-up afterwards.

Two donut charts from lemlist's recommended lemwarm schedule: for about 54 days before the first campaign a new mailbox sends 100% warm-up with lemlist at zero; after launch, 30 campaign emails plus 10 warm-up emails a day make warm-up 25% of sends.

Share of a new mailbox's daily sends that are warm-up, before and after the first campaign, following lemlist's recommended lemwarm setup.

Link builders rarely need that runway. Their volume is small: mailboxes sending 20 to 49 emails a day had a 5.7% reply rate against a 4.5% average in Hunter's State of Email Outreach 2026, and a link building mailbox seldom needs more. You can warm a new outreach mailbox with real pitches instead: about 5 a day in the first week, rising to 20 to 40 by the fourth, so the mailbox earns replies from editors while it ramps. Our ramp-up schedule for a new outreach mailbox covers that, along with the DNS records to set before the first send.

This does not make lemlist a bad choice. It means the warm-up switch is a decision, in lemlist and in every alternative below that includes warm-up: ask the vendor how its warm-up generates engagement, and look up your outreach domains on Validity's lookup tool before you rely on it.

Every price below is the list price on the vendor's own pricing page for its entry plan with automated follow-ups. The last column covers three things a link builder otherwise does in other tools: SEO metrics on each prospect, finding the contact, and monitoring the live link.

The table splits into two groups. Cold email senders are cheaper than lemlist and send just as well, but they also leave prospect qualification and link tracking to you. Link building platforms add those jobs and cost more per seat. lemlist sits with the senders on what it does for link building, and above most of them on price.

Scatter matrix of monthly cost for 500 prospects against link building jobs covered: Woodpecker $35, Smartlead $39, Saleshandy $41 and Instantly $47 cover zero or one; lemlist $69 covers one; linkOreach $49, BuzzStream $174 and Pitchbox $300 cover all three.

Cost for 500 prospects a month on each entry plan against how many of three link building jobs (SEO metrics, contact finding, link monitoring) the tool covers. Prices from each vendor's pricing page.

Which alternative fits why you are leaving

You only want cheaper sending. You already qualify sites in Ahrefs or Semrush and find contacts with a separate tool. Pick a sender. Woodpecker is cheapest when volume is low or uneven, because you pay for prospects contacted rather than a tier. Smartlead and Saleshandy are flat and cheap for steady volume.

You want fewer tools, not a cheaper one. Your time goes on the spreadsheet between your SEO tool, your contact finder, lemlist and your link tracker. Pick a link building platform, and choose by team size: linkOreach for solo link builders and small teams, BuzzStream for teams that want one shared record of every contact, Pitchbox for agencies running many campaigns at once.

You run sales outreach too. If your team books meetings as well as building links, lemlist's Multichannel plan or another sales engagement tool may still be the better primary tool, and a link building platform can sit next to it for SEO campaigns only.

You want off warm-up networks. Woodpecker, Saleshandy and Instantly list warm-up on their entry plans; linkOreach, BuzzStream and Pitchbox do not list it as a feature. Whatever you choose, the setting matters more than the brand.

The seven alternatives, one by one

linkOreach

linkOreach homepage introducing Linkzy, an autonomous AI link builder, with Start for free and Book a demo buttons

The linkOreach homepage, which leads with Linkzy, its AI link building agent.

We built linkOreach for link builders who want prospects, contacts, sequences and link records in one place rather than across four tools. Linkzy, the AI agent inside it, builds a prospect list from your keywords, DR range, traffic floor and location using Ahrefs data, goes for the SEO lead first, then content marketing, then the CMO, checks each address before anything sends, writes a pitch for each site that you can edit first, runs follow-ups on a cadence, stops the sequence when someone replies, and tracks the thread through to a live, indexed backlink. You can run every step manually instead and switch between the two at any time. Campaign types cover guest posts, niche edits, listicles, blogger outreach, link exchange and unlinked brand mentions, and our page on Linkzy, the shared inbox and backlink gap analysis covers the rest, including sending from your own Gmail, Outlook or SMTP mailbox.

We currently offer one plan at $49 a month, an introductory price, with 500 email credits, 5,000 searches and 100,000 Ahrefs credits; 500 extra email credits are $19. The trial runs 7 days with no card.

Pick something else if you run sales cold email, need tens of thousands of sends a month, or want LinkedIn and calling steps. lemlist Multichannel or a sales sender fits those jobs better.

BuzzStream

BuzzStream homepage with the headline Get More Links, Traffic, and Coverage, describing its outreach CRM

The BuzzStream homepage, which positions it as an outreach CRM for links and coverage.

BuzzStream is a relationship database first: every contact, email and placement stays on a record the whole team sees. Automated follow-ups start on Growth at $174 a month for three users, with $58 for each extra user, 25,000 contacts, 250 prospecting searches, an Ahrefs integration and monitoring for 25,000 links. Plans are monthly with no minimum term.

Pick something else if you work alone: Starter is $49 but has no automated follow-ups, so the useful plan is priced for a team.

Pitchbox

Pitchbox homepage presenting it as an AI outreach platform for link building and AEO, with a Book a demo button

The Pitchbox homepage, which pitches an AI outreach platform for link building and AEO.

Pitchbox is the agency option. Pro is $300 a month on a one-year commitment, or $210 billed annually, for 2 users, 2 email accounts, 2,000 outreach emails and 25 campaigns a month, with Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz and Majestic data, an email finder and verifier, and monitoring for 1,000 links. Advanced, at $600, opens up unlimited users and 6 email accounts. Trials go through a demo.

Pick something else if you cannot commit to a year, or your team is three people or more and $600 a month is out of reach. Once links are placed for several clients, order tracking, client reporting and invoicing become their own stage, which BuildLinks is built for.

Woodpecker

Woodpecker homepage describing a cold email and LinkedIn outreach tool, with a 14-day trial and no credit card required

The Woodpecker homepage, which describes a cold email and LinkedIn outreach tool.

Woodpecker charges $7 per 100 contacted prospects a month, with unlimited email accounts and team members, 16,000 emails a month, unlimited verification including catch-all addresses, 4 warm-ups and 100 Lead Finder credits. Extra warm-ups are $5 per mailbox and the agency panel is $27 per active client. The trial runs 14 days or 100 cold emails, whichever comes first, with no card.

Pick something else if your volume is high and steady, where a flat plan with a large allowance works out cheaper.

Saleshandy

Saleshandy homepage presenting a multichannel outbound platform, with an email sign-up field and Google and Microsoft sign-in

The Saleshandy homepage, which presents a multichannel outbound platform for booking meetings.

Saleshandy Starter is $41 a month, or $34 billed yearly, for one user with unlimited email accounts, 2,000 active prospects, 6,000 emails a month and 1,500 lead finder credits. Pro, at $99 a month, covers 10 users, 30,000 prospects and 100,000 emails. The trial runs 7 days with no card.

Pick something else if two or more people need the same workspace and $99 is more than you want to pay for sending alone.

Smartlead

Smartlead homepage with the headline Get More Replies, Build More Pipeline, describing cold email infrastructure

The Smartlead homepage, which leads with cold email infrastructure and inbox placement.

Smartlead Base is $39 a month, or $32 billed yearly, for unlimited email accounts, 2,000 contacts, 6,000 emails and 2,000 verified emails a month. Pro, at $94, moves to 30,000 contacts and 90,000 emails, and white label client workspaces are a $29 add-on from Pro upward. All plans start with a free trial and no card.

Pick something else if you need to find contacts inside the tool; Smartlead verifies addresses but leaves finding them to you.

Instantly

Instantly homepage with the headline Find Clients Instantly and a prompt box for its AI agents

The Instantly homepage, which opens on a prompt box for its AI agents.

Instantly Growth is $47 a month, or $37.60 billed yearly, for unlimited email accounts and warm-up, 1,000 contacts and 5,000 emails a month; Hypergrowth, at $97, raises that to 25,000 contacts and 125,000 emails. Lead data sits in a separate product, and bundles with it start at $94 a month.

Pick something else if you contact more than 1,000 prospects a month on a small budget: the Growth contact cap is the tightest of the senders here.

What about Respona?

If Respona is on your shortlist, check what it sells first. Respona now sells placements instead of software seats: $100 to $500 per placement, priced by the publisher's DR and traffic, with content, outreach and publishing included. That is a different product. A placement you pay for is a paid link, and Google's spam policies list "exchanging money for links, or posts that contain links" as link spam unless the link carries rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". If you buy placements, decide your policy on that attribute before you order, and do not compare a per-placement price with a monthly outreach subscription.

Worked example: a three-person team contacting 1,200 sites a month

Per-seat pricing changes the answer once more than one person sends. Take an in-house team of three link builders contacting 1,200 prospects a month with a pitch and two follow-ups, which is up to 3,600 emails if nobody replies early.

ToolCheapest plan that fitsMonthly priceStill done elsewhere
lemlistEmail (unlimited users, 50,000 emails)$69, plus contact data add-onsSite qualification, link tracking
SmartleadBase (2,000 contacts, 6,000 emails)$39Site qualification, contact finding, link tracking
Woodpecker12 × $7 per 100 prospects$84Site qualification, link tracking
linkOreachOne plan plus two 500-credit top-ups$87, if each prospect uses one email creditNothing beyond your mailboxes
InstantlyHypergrowth (Growth caps contacts at 1,000)$97Site qualification, contact finding, link tracking
SaleshandyPro (Starter is one user)$99Site qualification, link tracking
BuzzStreamGrowth (3 users included)$174Your mailboxes; check whether the Ahrefs integration needs your own subscription
PitchboxAdvanced (Pro has 2 users and 2,000 emails)$600, one-year commitmentYour mailboxes

Two results stand out. lemlist's Email plan is one of the cheaper options for a team, because users are unlimited, so leaving it to save money only works if you move to a sender like Smartlead. And the price column is not the full cost: every row that leaves site qualification and link tracking to other tools adds an SEO data subscription and the hours spent moving rows between spreadsheets. Price those before you compare. Our roundup of email outreach tools for link builders runs the same comparison for a solo freelancer at 500 prospects a month.

Switching from lemlist without hurting your domain

Moving tools is when bounces, double sends and broken DNS records happen. Run through this before the first campaign goes out from the new tool.

  • [ ] Export every lead with its status, so contacts already in a sequence do not get a second first pitch from the new tool.
  • [ ] Export your unsubscribes and every "no" reply into one suppression list, and import it before anything else.
  • [ ] Pause all lemlist campaigns before the new tool sends anything, so no prospect sits in two sequences at once.
  • [ ] Turn lemwarm off deliberately and check your domains on Validity's lookup tool.
  • [ ] Remove any custom tracking domain record you created for lemlist if the new tool does not use it.
  • [ ] Confirm SPF still lists only the services that send for the domain, and that DKIM signs for the new tool if it relays mail.
  • [ ] Send a test to Gmail and check that SPF, DKIM and DMARC all show PASS.
  • [ ] Rebuild templates as plain text with one link; our pitch and follow-up templates by campaign type are a starting point.
  • [ ] Restart at half your previous daily volume per mailbox for the first week, with open tracking off.
  • [ ] Set the new sequences to a pitch and two follow-ups that stop on any reply, out-of-office included.

Keep the follow-up count at two. Three messages in total averaged a 6.8% reply rate against 3.3% for a single email, and sequences with three or more follow-ups did worse. Campaigns with open tracking off replied at 7.4% against 4.4% with it on. For the steps around the sequence, from qualifying prospects to confirming placements, our step-by-step guide to link building outreach covers the full campaign.

Conclusion

Leave lemlist for a reason, not a price list. If you only need cheaper sending and already qualify sites elsewhere, Woodpecker, Smartlead or Saleshandy cover 500 prospects a month for $35 to $41. If you want SEO data, contacts and live link tracking in the tool, linkOreach costs $49 a month, and BuzzStream and Pitchbox cost $174 to $300 for teams. For a team of three, lemlist Email's unlimited users at $69 is hard to beat on price alone.

Whatever you pick, treat warm-up as a decision, import your suppression list first, restart at half volume, keep two follow-ups that stop on any reply, and leave open tracking off.

If you want to try the platform route, start a free 7-day linkOreach trial and let Linkzy build your first prospect list.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best lemlist alternative for link building?

It depends on why you are leaving. For cheaper sending when you already qualify sites elsewhere, Woodpecker, Smartlead and Saleshandy cover 500 prospects a month for $35 to $41. For SEO data, contact finding and live link tracking in one tool, linkOreach is $49 a month, and BuzzStream Growth ($174) and Pitchbox Pro ($300 on a one-year commitment) suit larger teams.

How much does lemlist cost?

The Email plan is $69 a month, or $55 billed yearly, with unlimited users and senders and 50,000 emails a month. The Multichannel plan, which adds LinkedIn, SMS and calls, is $109 a month or $87 billed yearly, per user. Extra contact data is an add-on from $20 a month.

Is lemwarm safe to use after Heatwave?

Nobody outside Validity can say, because Heatwave does not name vendors or publish its detection criteria. lemlist's own guide has a new mailbox send only warm-up for about 54 days before the first campaign, then keeps 10 warm-up emails a day running alongside it. Link building volume is low enough to warm a mailbox with real pitches instead, from about 5 a day to 20 to 40.

Is there a cheaper alternative to lemlist?

Yes, for solo senders. Woodpecker costs $7 per 100 contacted prospects a month, Smartlead Base is $39 and Saleshandy Starter is $41. For a team, lemlist's Email plan is harder to beat because users are unlimited for $69 a month.

Can I use lemlist for link building outreach?

Yes, for sending and follow-ups. It does not show Domain Rating or traffic for prospects and does not track whether the link went live, so qualification happens in your SEO tool and links are recorded somewhere else.
